Know Before You Go
Legal Guide
Important laws and customs every traveler must know
Personal Safety
Petty theft is common in tourist areas. Avoid walking with expensive cameras, phones, or jewelry visible. Do not resist if mugged — it is not worth the risk. Use Uber, avoid unmarked taxis at night.
Drug Laws
Drug trafficking carries severe mandatory sentences. Personal use of small amounts is technically decriminalized but enforcement is inconsistent — avoid all narcotics in public.
Beach Safety
Copacabana and Ipanema have strong rip currents. Swim between the lifeguard flags. Beach theft by fast-moving thieves ('arrastão') occurs — leave valuables at your hotel.
Yellow Fever
Yellow fever vaccination is required for travel to Amazon states (Amazonas, Pará) and recommended for others. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure.
