Resort Zone Safety
Resort zones are safe; crime risk increases outside tourist areas, especially at night in Santo Domingo and Santiago. Use hotel transport for excursions. Avoid displaying expensive items in public.
Drug Laws
Drug trafficking carries mandatory 5–20 year sentences in Dominican prisons. Possession of any amount is a criminal offense. Prisons are dangerous and consular assistance limited.
Swimming Safety
North coast beaches (Playa El Valle, near Samaná) have dangerous undercurrents. Always check for warning flags and swim at supervised beaches.
