Know Before You Go
Legal Guide
Important laws and customs every traveler must know
Altitude Sickness
Cusco is at 3,400m and Machu Picchu at 2,430m. Most visitors experience some altitude sickness (headache, nausea). Spend 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco before trekking. Coca tea is legal and mildly helpful. Consult a doctor about acetazolamide before travel.
Drug Laws
Peru is a major cocaine producer. Despite this, drug possession and trafficking carry severe penalties for foreigners. You may encounter offers on the street — refuse firmly.
Taxi Safety
Only use official radio taxis or apps in Lima. Express kidnappings by unofficial taxis occur. Have your hotel call a taxi or use the Uber/Cabify app.
Machu Picchu Entry
Machu Picchu entry is strictly limited and requires pre-booked tickets. Time slots sell out weeks or months in advance, especially June–August. Book at machupicchutickets.com before traveling.
