Know Before You Go
Legal Guide
Important laws and customs every traveler must know
Drug Decriminalization
Portugal decriminalized personal possession of all drugs in 2001. Possession of small amounts for personal use results in an administrative hearing and possible fine — not imprisonment. Drug trafficking remains a criminal offense.
Pickpocketing
Lisbon's tourist areas (Alfama, Tram 28, Baixa) have high pickpocketing rates. Use a crossbody bag, keep wallets in front pockets, be alert on crowded trams.
Beach Safety
Atlantic coast beaches (Nazaré, Sagres) have powerful rip currents — swim only at supervised beaches with a green flag. Algarve beaches are generally calmer.
